Horseback Riding in Winter
Ah, the joys of horse management in winter: frozen water buckets, icy walkways, and the ever-present debate of whether or not to blanket your horse (and, if so, which blanket to use). Amidst all of these chores, many horse owners would also like to enjoy actually exercising with their horses at some point this winter. Here are a few things to consider before you tack up:
Slip Sliding Away
As all of this rainwater freezes, our horses are at risk of falling on icy paths and pastures. Here are some ways to prevent this from happening, and what to do if it does happen.
Caring for your Horse in the Extreme Cold
Horses in good health and good body condition (body condition score of 5-6 or higher) with a fully grown winter hair coat can withstand significant drops in temperature provided they have protection from the wind and wet conditions, and plenty of water and food.

Feeding Your Senior Horse in the Winter
Many of our clients who already struggle with weight maintenance in their senior horse in the spring and summer are concerned about how to adapt their feeding plans for their horse in order to best equip them to get through the dramatic winter conditions of Wisconsin.
Turning Your Horse Out in the Winter
Preparing our horses and our pastures for winter turnout brings a new set of challenges to horse owners. We need to consider the basics of keeping our horses warm and keeping happy herd dynamics, as well as the more complex issues such as what our horses should have on their feet in the winter, and what secondary trauma we need to think about.
Feeding Your Horse in the Winter
It's important to adapt your horse's feeding schedule to best equip them for the Winter. There are three key components - access to water, feeding the microbes, and feeding the horse.
