Dr. Alderman Travels to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
The Sung Oyate (Horse People) is a group of veterinarians, veterinary students, farriers, and veterinary technicians that travel each summer to provide veterinary care to the equines on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Dr. Alderman has traveled to South Dakota to work with the Sung Oyate for three years now.

Safety and Efficacy of Compounded Medication
Compounding drugs is the process of customizing a drug for a horse when a commercially available one does not already exist. This is a necessity to meet the therapeutic goals for a horse’s health, and is important for successful veterinary care. Illegally compounded drugs are drugs which often are created as less expensive alternatives to FDA approved medication.
Ulcergard, Gastrogard, and Unapproved Medication
Illegally compounded alternatives to Gastrogard and Ulcergard are a common issue, and are a health risk to your horse. We cover how to identify those, and what the difference is between Gastrogard (prescription treatment) and Ulcergard (over-the-counter prevention).
EIA (Coggins) Testing Rules
Testing horses for equine infectious anemia has been around for a long time, but the regulations frequently change. In January 2015, rules changed so that the negative coggins tests are good for twelve full months instead of one calendar year.
Official Veterinarians of the Madison Mounted Police
As Officer Sarah McLaughlin puts it, “We always joke that no one wants to pet a squad car, per say, or a police car, but the horses are an approachable means for the police to be able to interact with the public and kind of draw people out of their homes!”
